BA (Hons) Primary Education

Introduction

The Primary Education Single Honours Programme aims to provide an academically challenging and intellectually rigorous course of learning that will be of particular interest to those students wishing to pursue a career related to Primary Teaching.  Successful candidates will be well placed to apply for a PGCE programme upon completion of this course to gain the necessary Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) to work as a classroom teacher.

However, the benefit of undertaking this BA programme instead of a BEd QTS course, is that you have an opportunity to leave your career options open.  If you decide being a qualilfied teacher is your career aim, this still remains a possibility.  However, during your studies and after experiencing a range of work placement settings, you may decide that you wish to pursue an education career outside of the classroom.  The BEd programme is entirely focused on meeting the challenging Ofsted requirements to achieve a QTS qualification, leaving you little time to consider career options outside of the classroom.

We aim to engage students with concepts of individual and social change and development, the nature of knowledge, and critical engagement with ways of knowing, with a particular emphasis on ideas, issues and needs of students at this stage of their education.  Through active inquiry into contemporary educational issues, policies and debates surrounding the purpose and possibilities of education, students will develop their understanding, skills, and personal and professional identities.

A new accelerated 2 year programme is also being developed for 2012 entry.  Upon completion, successful students will be well placed to pply to undertake a 1 year PGCE programme to gain qualified teacher status.  This new 2 year BA plus a 1 year PGCE provides an alternative route to the traditional 3 year BEd teacher training programme.

Career Opportunities

On successful completion, our graduates will be equipped to engage with an increasing range of learning and employment opportunities associated with education although most will no doubt intend to go on to Primary Teaching [PGCE].  Other opportunities open to graduates might include Early Years Education, Community Education, Youth Work, Children’s Workforce Professionals, Educational Management, Welfare and Administration, Library and Information Management Professionals, Language Analysts, the Media and Publishing – both in this country and internationally.  The understandings and skills developed during their time here will not limit them to these professions however, and we aim to ensure they develop the generic/holistic skills that employers are looking for in graduates of the twenty first century.
